Readers, I treasure you.
Please, forgive me, as I go on hiatus just after getting back in the game — a shocking fire destroyed my home on New Year’s Eve. My animal companions and I are safe, but I’ve lost almost everything else and the building is not just uninhabitable but a crime scene.
With many thanks to the valiant DCFD and friends, there’s still a dizzying amount to do logistically, legally, and otherwise—in addition to recovering from COVID.
How bad was the damage? My copy of Justice Brown Jackson’s biography wasn’t a paperback, and here’s what my edition looks like. Gone the way of so many of my other books, acquired over a lifetime lived by the tenets of tsundoku (no, not the puzzle).
With zero expectation, any and all help is very much appreciated. Insurance doesn’t account for a fire of this scale or intensity, nor displacement for more than a year—the present estimate for reconstruction—beginning in the middle of winter.
I will be back in the arena as soon as possible. My forthcoming post? “The Most Anti-Family Administration of Our Lives.” Take that, JD and Elon.
Tragic. I can’t imagine. Hope you are rebuilding OK
